The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Ambegaon taluka of Pune District in the west Indian state of Maharashtra.It is spread over 120 sq kms in the western ghats of Sahyadri ranges. Bhimashanker sanctuary is a location for nature lovers all across the Maharashtra. This sanctuary is witnessed a heavy rainfall during the monsoon. This sanctuary has offered a very popular trek to reach at Bhimashankar temple which is a Jyotirlinga.
Attractions
About the Sanctuary
The sanctuary is located in the northern part of the Western Ghats. It is spread over three districts Pune, Thane and Raigad. There is a shrine in the forest with the Jyotirlinga, temple of Lord Shiva. Two major tributaries of river Krishna namely Bhima and Ghod originate from this area. The valley is a splendid combination of shrubs, magical herbs, plant and animal life.
The Animals

The animals can be found here are Leopards, Barking deer, Sambar, Wild boar, Langur, Hyena. One might get to see the Malabar Giant Squirrel ( Shekru ).It is over three feet long.
The Birds
The Birds can be found here are Malabar Grey Hornbill, Quaker Babbler, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Green Pigeon, Black Eagle, Grey Jungle Fowl and many more..

Magical herbs, shrubs, jamun, Hirda, Behda, Bamboo, Fern.
Other Attractions
Temple of Lord Shiva, Bombay point, Nagphani point, Hanuman tank, Vanaspati point, Gupt Bhimashankar are important tourist attraction within the sanctuary. Devotees of Lord Shiva visit the temple in thousands on the day of Mahashivratri and in the Shravan month (Hindu calendar, corresponding roughly to July-August) on every Monday.
