Palampur is situated in the Kangra valley, near the Dhauladhar ranges on an altitude of 1,220 m above sea level, 30 km from Dharamshala. It is the tea capital of North India. A pleasant little town surrounded by tea plantations is not only known for its numerous tea gardens and paddy fields but it also known for its colonial architecture and temples. The place enjoys a healthy climate and the pine scented air is said to have curative properties.Behind this town stands high ranges of Dhauladhar mountains, whose tops remain covered for most part of the year. The weather in Palampur is moderate. Summers (April-June) are mild and winters (November-February) are cold but pleasant. It experiences southwestern monsoon rains in July-September. Several trek routes lead out of Palampur, particularly over the Dhauladhar Mountains towards the town of Chamba. Some important treks are over the Sanghar pass to Bharmaur via Holi and from Baijnath over the Jalsu pass to Bharmaur.

Neugal Khad is located around 2 kms from the main town and serves as an ideal picnic spot. Also called as Bundla Chasm, there is a 300 mt wide stream where tourists can enjoy picnicking. The spot also offers scenic views of the Dhauladhal ranges. The place receives rainfall throughout the year, but the beauty increases bounty times during the monsoons.

Art Gallery
Well known Indian portrait painter late Sardar Sobha Singh's art gallery still draws visitors each day. Punjabi playwright Mrs. Norah Richard also lived and died here. The Punjabi University holds an annual competition in Andretta in honour of Norah Richard in which plays are staged in the open. many living artists have made this village their home due to its scenic location, and quietness, as it is far away from noisy roads.

The village of Andretta is 13 km from Palampur and is an important craft center, which is known for its pottery. A number of well-known artists had made their base in Andretta. Chamunda Devi Temple
From Palampur the road passes through tea plantations before descending to the colorful Chamunda Devi temple complex on the bank of the Baner River, 10 kms to the west. Chamunda is a particularly wrathful form of Durga, the idol in the main temple is considered so sacred that it is completely hidden beneath a red cloth.

A monastery of recent origin, Tashijong is a community rather than a monastery. It encompasses a small stratum of the Tibetan refugees where one can see the dwellings of the people in exile. This monastery depicts structures at different levels, there is a college for freshers and a Tibetan restaurant. The main shrine is placed on a top platform at the fag end of a garden.
It’s curved roofs with red and golden colour ornamentation portrays prayer flags that waves with the gentle breeze. A thick loom like stupa, which is typical of a Buddhist shrine, adorns the extreme side of the garden. Secondary prayer halls where the monks carry out their routine prayers flank the garden.
Apart from its religious significance, the monastery holds an excellent craft emporium where one can get exquisite Tibetan artifacts. One of the alluring sites in Palampur, this monastery offers the imposing scenery of the Kangra valley and the near by surroundings. By Train
The nearest railway station is at Maranda, which is 2 km from Palampur and on the narrow-gauge line between Pathankot and Jogindernagar.
By Bus
Palampur is well connected by road to all major cities and towns in and around the state. Himachal Road Transport Corporation(HRTC) is the best way to travel.There are many buses from Dharamshala 40 kms, Kangra 18 kms, Kulu-Manali 205 kms & Shimla 259 kms.
