Jama Masjid In Srinagar

Jama Masjid is a monument of the wonderful Islamic architecture. The present mosque, an impressive building without any topped dome, was built in 1674. The Jama Masjid has four spires tower which is visible above the rooflines. The mosque’s main attractions are the prayer halls, which are covered by numerous pillars, around 370 in number; each one is made of single piece of deodar trunk.

History Of Jama Masjid

The Masjid was built in the 14th century. It was built by Sultan Sikandar. His son, Zain-ul-Abidin enlarged it. The mosque excellently illustrates the cross-cultural fertilization of the culture of Kashmir. The fire destroyed it thrice but every time the Masjid was rebuilt. The latest repair of this mosque was done during the period of Maharaja Pratap Singh.

Prayer Hall

Its architecture does not depict the pure Islamic style. The mosque is adorned with towers that are tall in shape of pyramid and have pagoda style. The mosque is built around a courtyard and it is supported by 370 pillars of wood. Each and every pillar is made up of a single and whole piece of Deodar trunk. Jama Masjid covers an area of 384 feet. This magnanimous Masjid is spacious enough to give room to more than 30,000 people at the same time to offer their prayers. The compound of the Masjid is constructed in the style of a Mughal garden having two broad paths. The Mosque is a symbol of the best architectural specimens that tolerated the havocs of the long course of time and still stands with pride to prove its vitality.

Damage caused by fire

Jamia Masjid of Srinagar has been subject to much destruction till date. Thrice this magnanimous mosque was ruined by fire but was restored after every disaster. The last restoration work was carried out under the reign of Maharaja Pratap Singh. Still today this mosque stands tall like the pride of Srinagar, holding within itself rich stories from the past and calling all Muslims to pray five times a day.

Direct train services are available from Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Trivandrum. Taxi services are available from Jammu to Srinagar and the fare is about Rs 6000
